ABSTRACT

This research considered the various morphological processes in the Warri pidgin. The work aimed at revealing these morphological processes and the functions they play in the Warri pidgin and how they change the original meaning and lexical categories of the words. The statement of problem in this research is the unavailability of research work in the aspect of morphological processes in the Warri pidgin, as some works has point at just one or two of these processes.

In other to find answers to the objectives of this study, relevant literatures related to this study will be reviewed and the aspects of lexical semantics that deals with ascribing meaning to words, was employed as the model for analyzing the data gathered. The one on one interview method by five selected speakers of the Warri pidgin was adopted as it enabled the researcher get accurate pronunciations, and the speakers meaning of the data gathered for the purpose of this research.

From this research, six morphological processes in the Warri pidgin were discovered, and how these morphological processes function to either change the original meaning of words, the lexical categories of the words, and how some helps to lay emphasis. It was also discovered that one word can undergo more than one morphological process.
