ABSTRACT

The morphological process of compounding s one that is predominant among African languages, the process bring about the creation of new words into the lexicon of the language, the Edo language is one that exhibit compounding in a special pattern, this study thus is an attempt to carry out an analysis on edo compounding process, the edo language belongs to the kwa group of languages that have this feature as a special one, the data for this study was carried out using an interview method, the Dixon basic linguistics theory was employed as the theoretical framework of the study, subsequently the data are presented and analyzed into various compounding groups and conclusions made. The analysis of the data collected reveal that Edo compound system exhibit the agglutinating system, Agglutination is a linguistic process in which morphemes are added to a base word without altering the original forms of those morphemes. In Edo, agglutination is a common method of creating compound words, most the compounded words retail their original form except for those that went through the process of vowel elision and insertion. Also, In Edo, compounding is achieved through the fusion of morphemes, resulting in a cohesive and often idiomatic word.
