ABSTRACT

The study of names (personal &places) have been obtaining sound in many linguistic literature with special attention given to African and by extension Nigeria languages. The current study seeks to contribute to the plethora of literature in this field of linguistics by accounting for the structure and meaning of places names in Edo state. The data for this study were obtained from an aged resident of the Oreọgbẹnẹ area of the Ogbe quarters in Benin city. he was selected due to his extensive knowledge of the different places/location in Ẹdo South where the Benin people are based. The data were obtained using a constructed interview with questions on the forms and meaning/circumstances leading to the naming of these locations. A descriptive analysis of the data collected was done then observed in the study that many places names in Benin have been disrupted in forms leading to distortion and ambiguity in their interpretation.it is the position of this study that more be done to preserve these parts of our linguistics heritage. the theoretical framework adopted for the morpho-semantics analysis of selected places names in Benin city. would involve examining the linguistic elements and meanings within those names. It would involve studying the morphological structure and semantic components of the names to understand how they convey specific messages or cultural significance. This analysis could help uncover patterns, themes, or historical connections embedded in the places names. The method of analysis adopted for this study is the descriptive approach. A descriptive method of analysis comprises two sets of activities: the collection of primary data and the analysis of these data.
