ABSTRACT
A morphosemantic analysis of Esan personal names was examined in order to show the Esan personal norms and values expressed in their meaning pattern.
A sample of 100 names for both male and females were used for the analysis. The purpose of the study was to determine the structure and meaning of Esan personal names. The objective of this study is to identify the distinctive common morphemes predominant in Esan personal names.
The morphological features, semantic interpretations and referential meaning of Esan personal names were analyzed. A descriptive approach was used to analyze the data. The following affixes are also involved in the derivation of Esan personal names; ose,ehi.omo.oko and ojie. They are affixes attached to other lexical items to give complete meaning to a name. The findings indicates that Esan personal names are derived from word classes such as nouns, verbs, adjectives etc. Esan personal names have meanings and should be reserved as a mark of culture and tradition.
