ABSTRACT

This study examines the morphophonemics of Igbo nouns, focusing on how morphology (word formation) and phonology (sound patterns) interact in Igbo noun structures. Morphophonemics plays a crucial role in determining the phonological adjustments that occur when morphemes combine, influencing the pronunciation and structure of words. The study analyzes various morphophonemics processes, such as vowel elision, nasal assimilation, glide formation, and homorganic nasal assimilation, which shape Igbo noun formation. Using Generative Phonology as the theoretical framework, the research investigates the underlying phonological rules that govern these morphophonemic changes. Data for the study is drawn from both primary and secondary sources, using wordlist elicitation, structured interviews and natural speech recordings. The analysis reveals that phonological processes in Igbo noun formation are systematic and rule-governed, ensuring that words conform to the phonotactic constraints of the language. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of Igbo phonology and morphology, providing insights for linguists, language learners, and educators. Additionally, this study plays a role in language preservation efforts, ensuring that the structural patterns of Igbo nouns are well-documented. By examining how sound changes occur within Igbo noun formation, the research enhances our knowledge of morphophonemic interactions in African languages and their broader linguistic significance.
