ABSTRACT

The Ugbowo-Lagos Road, Benin City, is currently experiencing rapid industrialization and urbanization, leading to a significant increase in vehicular traffic and associated air pollution which have become a major source for the alarming levels of air pollutants. This study aimed to address the critical need for an accurate and localized air pollution modelling framework specific to Ugbowo-Lagos Road, by developing a comprehensive understanding of the sources, dispersion patterns, and concentrations of air pollutants in these traffic zones, this research seeks to provide actionable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and environmental authorities Descriptive statistics such as frequency, variance, interquartile range (IQR), normality test, outlier detection, multivariate analysis on the sampling locations were carried out for the relevant data air pollutant data, traffic flow & vehicle type data, meteorological data. The Kriging Interpolation Method was employed for spatial distribution analysis of the sampling locations. The measured results displayed high CO values across all sampling locations during peak hour traffic with the University of Benin maingate recording the highest traffic volume count of 2516 while recording the highest CO of 192ppm. This study suggested green energy and transport alternatives to mitigate emission of these pollutants along the traffic zone.
