ABSTRACT
The in-dwelling restless spirit and passion for fresh and easy ways of expression with an attempt to curb paper waste seen around us, give rise to innovative and creative ways of painting. Collage is considered a subset of the mixed-media genre and paper collage is one of its types. The aim of this study is to explore mixed-media approach in collage painting, while the objectives is to achieve realism; impasto effect; 3-Dimensional effect and Tonal Values in mixed-media collage painting.
The paper undertakes a step by step studio exploratory method to successfully achieve the aim and objectives of the study through the use of materials such as newspapers, magazines, calendars and other found objects or discarded materials in our environment, recycled to produce artworks without necessarily cutting these papers into small clippings and paste one after another, instead big cutout paper are used to achieve result.
The study has revealed that there are endless possibilities of artwork creation. Mixed-media approach to collage painting techniques, if properly harnessed would yield a lot of economic value and tackle the issue of unemployment amongst the youth, with minimal funding and maximum output. It also serves as a channel for waste reduction and management in our environment. This study has revealed the need for researchers to be versatile; Collage painting technique has proven to be interesting, creative, self-expressive and innovative with the outcome of the works.
