ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect and characteristic performance of eggshell powder as a partial replacement of cement and sawdust as a partial replacement for sand in concrete. The eggshells were gotten from bakeries and local mill industries. The eggshells were properly sundried before being ground to powder. Cement was partially replaced by eggshell powder only of 10% and 15%, sawdust by sand only of 5% and 10% and a control mix of 0% replacement. A total of 72 concrete cubes of 100mm x 100mm x 100mm sizes were casted for 7, 14, 21 and 28-days curing period with a more conventional mix of 1:2:4 and a water/cement ratio of 0.6 was used. The tests carried were workability, specific gravity, compressive strength and water absorption. Previous research into the partial replacement of cement with eggshell powder have been carried out and it has been proven that the best percentage of replacement for cement with eggshell shell powder is between 10%- 15%. These are the percentage replacements used in this study.
