ABSTRACT
The study investigated the cause, problems and control of sand and water in producing wells in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria. Most of the problems associated with sand that are experienced in the Niger Delta stem from abrasive effect of sand, possibly aggravated by a corrosive environment necessitated by water production. Gravel packing and chemical consolidation are the commonest sand control measures employed in the area under study. While for water squeeze cementation and selective perforation are the most widely used control measures. Finally sand and water influx intro producing wells was not tolerated whenever the safety of production operations is jeopardized. In the light of the above statement the following recommendations were made: A preventive maintenance programme should be put in place. A sand and water prediction study should be embarked upon.
