ABSTRACT

Five (05) marble samples were obtained from Ubo and Environs located in Akoko Edo L.G.A., South-West Nigeria and lies within longitudes 06°15‟0” E and E6°27‟0” E and latitudes 07°16‟30” N and 07°22‟30”. Detailed studies of the marbles in Ubo and environs were carried on by determining the mineralogical compositions using X-ray diffraction techniques. The study is aimed at identifying the mineral content of marble from the area and hence qualify them. Results from the mineralogical analysis using the X-ray diffractometer reveals that the marble from the study area are composed predominantly Calcite. (53.7-57%) + Quartz (8.3-39%) + Garnet (11- 18.2%) + Anthophyllite (9-14%) + Albite (5-11.5%). Modal Composition shows that the mineral assemblage of Calcite+Quartz+Albite+Garnet+Anthophyllite indicates that the marble was probably formed at medium grade metamorphism and belongs to the middle-Greenschist Facies to the lower Amphibolite facies. Further X-ray Fluorescence studies, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP MS) could be done alongside petrographic interpretations to determine the geochemical distribution within the study area.
