ABSTRACT

Five (05) clay samples were obtained from Oduna, Edo State, southern Nigeria, to ascertain its suitability for refractory purpose. Samples were taken for treatment and preparation for x-ray diffraction analysis. The results from the X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that quartz contains (35-59%), kaolinite (32-55%), Orthoclase (5-12%), Montmorillonite (2.4-7%), Garnet (1.6-7%) and Muscovite (1-3.1). The result shows that Quartz and Kaolinite are the most abundant minerals in the clay samples. The predominance of Kaolinite coupled with little amounts of Muscovite and Montmorillonite suggest its suitability as a usage for paints and its unsuitability for refractory.
