ABSTRACT

The mineral analysis and phytochemical constituents of aqueous extract of dried calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa were studied. In Nigeria the plant is used to make popular beverage known as Zobo drink. The calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa were purchased at Uselu market, the calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa were washed thoroughly to remove dirt and air-dried under shade in a ventilated laboratory. The sample was pulverized using an electric blender. Distilled water was used as the solvent for extraction by maceration method. The phytochemical screening and elemental analysis were carried out using established standard methods. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of eugenols, glycosides, saponins, phenolics, tannins and reducing sugar. calcium (20.49 mg/kg), Potassium (19.51mg/kg), magnesium (6.02 mg/kg), sodium (1.18 mg/kg), iron (1.40 mg/kg) and copper (0.26 mg/kg). The results of this research work shows that the aqueous extract of the calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa is high enough in essential bioactive components and minerals required for biological functions and as a nutrition source for optimal performance and the maintenance of good health.
