ABSTRACT

The study had examined the Benin military system in pre-colonial time. The study examined the origin of the pre-colonial Benin Military, the organization and expansion of the pre-colonial Benin military and the rules of engagement. The study showed that Benin was traditional African society in southern Nigeria. It examines the origins, organization, and expansion of the military during. The study traced the origin of Benin military system to the formation of Benin kingdom followed the emergence of the Ogiso dynasty. The study showed the pre-colonial Benin military system was influenced by socio-economic background and political circumstances. The study showed that the army organization was a reflection of the way the political classes in Benin perceived their position and the state. The study also showed that during military operation, the army used defensive fortification, weapon strategy, warfare tactics, intelligence, logistics, supply, external influences, and economic dependency to ward-off enemy and defeat their opponent.
