ABSTRACT
This study assessed the methods of teaching history courses of history education students in University of Benin. Four research questions were raised to guide this study. Related literatures of eminent scholars’ views on the Study were reviewed. The study adopted descriptive survey research design, the total population comprised all History Education students from Faculty of Education, University of Benin which were employed for the study, while the sampled population was a total of one hundred and fifty (150) respondents where proportionate random sampling technique was employed. The research instrument employed for this study was a self-structured questionnaire that sought information from the respondents from selected schools. The reliability of the research instrument was ascertained using test-retest reliability technique. The reliability of the retrieved instrument was ascertained using Cronbach Correlation Coefficient method. A reliability coefficient score of 0.76 was obtained. Data was collected from the respondents and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency count and simple percentages. The findings revealed that teachers’ method teaching affect students’ academic performances either negatively or positively, that attitude of teachers affects negatively or positively towards teaching of History in schools. classroom management has influence on teaching of History in schools either negatively or positively. Finally, that available of instructional materials positively affect teaching and learning of History in schools. Based on the findings stated above, the following recommendations were made: Teachers should employ a better and effective teaching method to enable students understand and develop more interest in History. School management should time to time assess their teachers and lecturers by seeking opinion of students in the area of teacher’s attitude towards students. Qualify teachers should be allowed in the system to enhance their performances and quality of education. Training and retraining of teachers should be done regularly to improve on the existing knowledge as well as to improve their skill on modern facilities. Finally, government should make fund available to school to acquire all the learning materials needed in the course of the study.
