ABSTRACT
The study examined mental and emotional trauma as depicted in Okey Ndibe’s Arrows of Rain, it focused on the causes and consequences of both traumatic conditions in contemporary societies. The study adopted the qualitative research method with focus on the content analysis of the primary text. Instances of mental and emotional trauma were drawn from the novel, and they were analised using the Trauma Theory. The study found that corruption, injustice and failed governance are possible causes of mental and emotional trauma. Also the study revealed that mental and emotional trauma could make the affected citizens to become withdrawn or ostracised from active participation in contemporary societies.
