ABSTRACT
Background: Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is a vital aspect of women's health and well-being. Maintaining good menstrual hygiene might be difficult due to insufficient information about menstruation and inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities. Objectives: This study assesses the Knowledge, practices, and barriers related to MHM among university students. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study approach was conducted in the hostels of residence within the University of Benin, Ugbowo campus, Benin City, Edo state. A well-structured questionnaire was used to access university hostel facilities through responses from about 400 students on toilet facilities and water availability in their hostels. Results: The majority of respondents (96.4%) were within the age range of 16-25 years, and they had a good knowledge of menstruation as the mean knowledge score was 7.96 ± 0.94 (99.5%) out of the eight knowledge questions that were administered. The study highlighted the widespread use of commercial sanitary products while difficulty finding a private place and water to clean up were the significant barriers affecting menstrual hygiene management among university students. 30.09% mentioned non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as the most used medications for menstrual pains.
