ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at the measurement of sound emission from the condenser unit of an air conditioner and also the analysis of its effect on individuals around it.

The principal objective of this study is to check the permissible distance that is safe from the condenser unit emissions, under normal condition. To do this, we carry out the following procedures; The sound meter is placed at a fixed distance away from the condenser unit and the sound pressure level is measured for a period of one hour at intervals of 5minutes. Also, sound pressure level is measured at distances 2ft, 4ft and 6ft for a period of one hour at intervals of 5minutes respectively. The noise dosimeter is attached to the workers clothes and is allowed to stay around the noise source for some hours and the sound exposure level is measured. The temperature of the surrounding the condenser is measured at distances 2ft, 4ft, and 6ft at the same   duration   the   sound   pressure   level   is   measured   using   a   thermometer.   From our table of readings, it was observed that when the air conditioner was OFF, we had a total sound level of 56.1db, 74.6db, 60.6db, 71.4db, 75.1db, 76.9db for morning, afternoon, evening, and distances 2ft, 4ft, 6ft, respectively. And when it was switched ON, we had a total sound level of 82.3db, 84.8db, 81.2db, 90.5db, 93.1db, 84.1db for morning, afternoon, evening, and distances 2ft, 4ft, 6ft,respectively.
