ABSTRACT
This study attempt to investigate mate selection parameters as correlates of marital stability in Oredo local government area of Edo state. The study used correlational survey research design. The data was analyzed using Mean, standard deviation, two-sample independent ttest and Pearson product moment of correlation (PPMC). The population was made up of all the married individuals in the 12 political wards of Oredo local government area of Edo state and the sample size of 138 was determined using Cochrans formula. They consisted of 52 male and 86 female married couples with at least 5 years of marriage (M =3.10, SD=0.87). The main findings of the study indicated that prevalent parameters for mate selection in Oredo local government area are educational level of the potential partner, shared cultural and ethnic background, physical attractiveness, similarities of religious belief, emotional compatibility, personality and communication, family approval and support influence and economic stability. Also marital instability is caused by lack of understanding, cultural difference, and lack of home keeping skills, effective communication, financial problem and emotional compatibility
