ABSTRACT

The study of the Marketing of snails in selected markets in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria was carried out in Warri, Delta State. Five (5) markets were purposely selected based on the sales of snails in those markets. Primary data were collected through the administration of questionnaires to the respondents. Personal interview was also carried out to get more information on the study. A total of 124 copies of questionnaires were administered in the five (5) where the study was carried out. The results from the study revealed that the majority of the respondents (79.03%) obtained their snails from the village market while the least (3.23%) obtained theirs from snail farm. 91.94% of the respondents reported that the demand for snails is high while 8.06% reported that the demand is not high. The number of medium sized snails sold in a week by the sellers are two bags (51.61%), three bags (28.23%), and one bag (16.13%). The results also revealed that the majority of the respondents (54.84%) buy snails once in a month while the least number of respondents (4.84%) buy snails once in a year. The result also revealed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the 5 markets in the cost price of the different sizes of snails as Ibo market had the highest mean value of 258.3 and Igbudu market had the least mean value of 160.0.  The result also revealed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the 5 markets in the selling price of the different sizes of snails as Ibo market had the highest mean value of 338.3 and Igbudu market had the least mean value of 230.0. The results also revealed that snail business is very profitable as reported by 67.74% of the respondents while 32.26% reported that snail business is not profitable. The problems associated with snail business as reported by the majority of the respondents (60.48%) was the difficulty in storing them while the least number of respondents (1.61%) reported that it was the high cost of transportation. It was recommended that more people need to go into snail farming to increase snail availability which will help to reduce the price.
