ABSTRACT

In recent times, the market has taken new shape as buying and selling is not only conducted physically, but can be carried out virtually through various digital means. This is however, traceable to the pre-colonial times before the advents of the British into Benin and other parts of Nigeria. The Benin people thus, possessed a complex government structure that made the market as entity and the market system a demonstrative success, wherein the Oba remained in the helm of affairs. This was also made possible with the help of several executive bodies. The study therefore examines the historical origin of market in the pre-colonial Benin, the market system in pre-colonial Benin, the activities and items of trade in the market in pre-colonial Benin. It also reveals that market in the human history and in any society was a gradual process and was one that took several years to develop into the modern form and shape. Thus, societies were intricately connected with the founding of the market. Aptly, Market is the hub of the economic activities of the people.
