ABSTRACT

Adverbialisation in this work, is a lexical process that involves modification of a primary category. Adverbs are that which serves modification purpose, it functions as modifiers of nouns, noun phrase, and verbs. An adverb serves as a modifier of a verb, an adjective, another adverb, a preposition, a phrase, a clause, or a sentence, expressing some relation of manner or quality, place, time, degree, number, cause, opposition, affirmation or denial. (Emenanjo 2015)

The aim of this study is to determine Manner Adverbials in Igbo Language to determine the nature of adverbials in Igbo as well as their grammatical behaviors in the language. The Theoretical Framework as adopted in this work is Phrase Structure Grammar (PSR). It is a theory used to breakdown sentence of a natural language into its constituent parts also known as Syntactic Categories. The data used in this work is a secondary data gotten from Ọja Dufuo Dike by Ray, C. Anene. The data presented and analysed in this work is restricted solely to the data as used in the Prose.

In this work is the Morpho-syntax of the VP, where the theoretical framework is applied. From our findings, we discovered that adverbials can be analysed from any linguistic perspective; Phonetics /Phonology, Morphology, Syntax and Semantics. For this work, the adverbials are thus analysed syntactically. In this work also are the different ways adverbials are realized in Igbo language.
