ABSTRACT

This study investigated the Management Factors Influencing Academic performance of students in government secondary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. Purpose of this study were to assess the managerial roles in the operation of government secondary schools, to identify the influence of management factors on the academic performance of government schools students in Ovia North-East local government, to determine and examine other factors that influence the academic performance of government secondary school students, to identify the effects of poor management of government secondary schools and how it affects the academic performances of students and to identify ways on how school management can positively influence the academic performances of its students. Five research questions and one hypothesis were stated for the study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. A total sample of 200 respondents was randomly selected from the total population of government secondary school students in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. The sampling technique used for the study was simple random(SRS), where 200 students were randomly selected from eight government secondary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government area of Edo State. A self-developed Likert-type scale titled "Management Factors Influencing Academic performance of students in Government secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State  Questionnaire" thoroughly scrutinized by the project supervisor was used for data collection. The instrument was validated and found reliable. It was personally administered by the researcher. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency count and percentages to analyze the demography variables and research questions. The results showed that management factors usually influence or affect the academic performances of students in the secondary schools be it positively or negatively. Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn; that students who go to schools to receive classes without adequate learning materials are very likely not to perform well and poor management factors truly limits or hinders students’ academic successes. Based on conclusion, the following recommendations were made; that stakeholders in education sector should ensure that government secondary schools are well equipped with modern learning facilities that will aid and boost the academic  performances of students, teachers should be trained on how to perform as counselors so as to guide students on how to make right decisions about their lives, that school management should adequately supervise and ensure that daily monitoring of students attendance and academic performance are done and the government together with the community and management should partner and work together so as to find lasting solutions to the factors that negatively influence the academic performances of students.
