ABSTRACT
The insurance industry is a critical component of the financial services sector, providing risk management, capital accumulation, and long-term savings opportunities. Understanding the factors that affect the financial performance of insurance companies is essential for both industry stakeholders and policymakers. This study explores the relationship between macroeconomic variables, including interest rates, inflation rates, exchange rates, and economic growth, and the financial performance of insurance firms listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange from 2010 to 2023. Using a quantitative research design, data was collected from financial statements of selected insurance companies and relevant macroeconomic data sources. The analysis involved descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The findings of this study indicate that interest rates have a positive and statistically significant relationship with insurance companies' profitability in Nigeria. In contrast, inflation rates exhibit a negative and statistically significant relationship with insurance firms' profitability. The relationship between exchange rates and profitability, while positive, was statistically insignificant. These findings highlight the importance of macroeconomic variables in influencing the financial performance of insurance companies in Nigeria. To enhance the performance of the insurance sector, it is recommended that the government implement policies to manage inflation rates carefully, maintain stable exchange rates, and promote a conducive economic environment. These measures will contribute to the growth and stability of the insurance industry, ultimately benefiting the Nigerian economy. This research contributes to the existing knowledge base by shedding light on the intricate relationship between macroeconomic variables and insurance firms' financial performance. It serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, insurance industry management, investors, and academics interested in understanding the dynamics of the insurance sector in Nigeria.
