This study examines the UN responses to sexual violence against men and boys in armed conflict; a situation in which men and boys have been subjected to sexual violence including rape and torture have been sparsely documented around the globe. Since 2000, cases have been documented in at least 25 countries from Latin and Central America, through Africa, the Middle East and Asia. North America is not excluded, with notorious examples of sexual abuse by US military of male captives in Iraq. The research is a step towards understanding this problem, measures of prevention and protection, and consequences for accused perpetrators. To achieve this, the research uses the doctrinal approach to find out the level of knowledge and work by the UN and other stake holders in the field of male sexual violence. The research findings and recommendations were thus: wartime sexual violence in men and boys can involve different acts, purposes, perpetrators, and victims that should be included in legal definitions of states and truth commission mandates must be carried out consciously. To this end, we must improve our understanding of all forms of sexual violence so we can comprehensively address sex crimes and achieve justice for victims.
