ABSTRACT

Aspartame is one of the most widely used nonnutritive, intense sweeteners in the world, but its safety is still being debated. Recently, high cases of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases have been on the rise, and carbonated drinks have been implicated being one of many food products that contain aspartame, the study was designed to investigate the effects of long-term administration of aspartame on lipid profile and blood glucose level in serum of male Sprague Dawley rats. Thirty one(31) Rats were assigned into Five groups (A-E), 0.50ml distilled water was given to control (A)while aspartame at doses of 40mg/kg, 80mg/kg , 160mg/kg and 320mg/kg Aspartame was administered orally via gavage to experimental groups(B-E). All datas were analysed using Graphpad prism version 8.0.1. The result of this study showed no effect on FBS (P<0.05). Both TC and TG levels showed a non-significant decrease in the aspartame treated rats. The serum HDL-C also showed no significant difference between the control and aspartame treated groups except 40mg/kg and 320mg/kg which seemed to portray a decrease. However, LDL-C was significantly increased in the group administered 320mg/kg when compared to the control. VLDL-C showed no significant difference when the control was compared to the group administered 40mg Aspartame, except the group administered 320mg/kg, which showed a significant decrease, there was no significant difference in the Plasma AI except the 40mg/kg which was significantly increased. Also in this study, aspartame had no effect on the CRR I and II, as there was no significant difference between that of the control group and the aspartame treated groups. In conclusion, aspartame may cause oxidative stress in the liver, leading to alterations in cholesterol metabolism.
