Abstract
This study examined local government and implementation of basic education policy in Nigeria: A study of Egor Local Government (2010 – 2018). This study adopted the research design which was used to source data from a sample of 60 staffs from Egor Local Government Secretariat. The data was analysed using percentage and chi-square statistics. The result shows that there is no significant impact and importance of UBE programme on child’s overall development in Egor Local Government. This implies that the implementation of basic education in Egor has a lot of lapses. The result also affirms that there is significant relationship between availability personnel capacities for UBE programme and child’s overall development in Egor Local Government. The result shows that there is significant impact of adequate funding for effective implementation of UBE programme on child’s overall development Egor Local Government. The study recommends that education should be insulated from political interference and be made to function effectively, especially at the Basic Education level for; it is the foundation of our Educational system. To actualize the Education for All target, the State government, Local Government and in collaboration with other stakeholder should assist in provision of basic health care services, transportation facilities for children that have to cover long distance. The commitment of government should ensure unfettered access to quality basic education for children of school going-age is highly commendable. The parents of these children should be adequately oriented to participate in their children’s education, especially by encouraging them to speak the English language in their respective homes, assisting them in whatever ways they can.
