ABSTRACT
This Paper Identified Local Government as an agent of development with particular focus on Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. According to Anikeze (2014), Local Government ‘’is a government operating at the base level or rudimentary level of society’’, while Abba (2007), defines it as “work at the grass root level that is impacting on the everyday life of the people.” Hence, using the descriptive approach, this paper portrays democracy as a catalyst for rural development and examines how Local Government can accelerate economic development in the country. Furthermore, beyond discussing the role of Local Government, this paper also examines some challenges faced by Local Government administration, especially in Warri South Local Government Area and also makes some recommendations on how the bedevilling challenges can be surmounted.
