ABSTRACT

Azanza garckeana is a plant commonly found in Africa, it is consumed locally and reportedly used for diverse medicinal purposes. This study was carried out to determine the effect of aqueous-methanol pulp extract of Azanza garckeana on liver function of male Wistar Albino rats. A total of Twenty-four (24) rats were used for this study. The rats were acclimatized for seven (7) days and divided into four (4) groups with six (6) rats per group. Group 1 served as control group and group 2 to 4 were the experimental test groups administered doses of 50 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg, and 2000 mg/kg of aqueous-methanol pulp extract of Azanza garckeana daily for fourteen days respectively. At the end of the experimental period, the rats were anesthetized with chloroform, blood sample was collected from the abdominal aorta and the heart and the rats were then sacrificed. Liver functionanalysis was carried out using standard methods and procedures. The results revealed a non-significant change (p>0.05) in alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities inexperimental group animals relative to the control group. This result also revealed a significant increase (p<0.05) in total bilirubin levels of rats administered 50 and 300mg/kg b.wt of the aqueous-methanol pulp extract of Azanza garckeana compared with the control group, while that of total protein and Albumin were not significantly different (p>0.05) relative to the control. Conclusively, Aqueous-methanol pulp extract of Azanza garckeana fruits has no negative impact on the liver.
