ABSTRACT

Crassocephalum crepidioides of the family Asteraceae popularly known as Ebolo in Yoruba language is a plant well known for its traditional medicinal uses in Africa especially West Africa and Asia. The ethnomedicinal uses of the plant include wound healing and also as an antidiabetic. In Cameroonian culture, it is used as an antiepileptic agent. The aim of the project was to review the existing literature to assess its ethnomedicinal uses, pharmacological properties and phytochemical constituents and analyze its traditional uses and compare to its pharmacological activities. The project was carried out using online databases such as PubMed, Sciencediect, Google scholar and African Journal Online. The relevant information obtained from different literatures were analyzed and compared to find the correlation between the plants use in culture and it pharmacological activity. The findings suggest that Crassocephalum crepidioides has shown its antidiabetic, antimicrobial, lipid lowering effects, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This plant has shown promising therapeutic potential and could serve as a valuable source of novel bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds for pharmaceutical development. Further research is warranted to elucidate its mechanisms of action and explore its clinical applications especially on the antiepileptic property of the plant.
