ABSTRACT

Obesity is due to an excessive amount of fat stored in the body that may have negative effect on human health. Obesity is becoming more prevalent worldwide and is now seen as a serious public health concern. Herbal medicine research has been used over the years to curtail certain diseases such as obesity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the liporegulatory potential of the Irvingia gabonensis root aqueous extract in cholesterol induce Wistar rats. The Wistar rats were randomly selected into five (5) groups (n=5). Group 1, 2 and 3 serves as the treatment group administered orally at graded doses (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) of Irvingia gabonensis extract, group four (reference group) received oral doses of 10 mg/kg of atorvastatin and group five (untreated group) were treated with distilled water only. Treatments were administered for 21 days after cholesterol-induced lipidaemia. The result of this study showed that the investigatory effect of the lipo-regulatory, of Irvingia gabonensis extract exhibited a significant reduction in lipid lowering effects via a decrease in total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low density lipoprotein levels when compared with the control groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the findings from this study showed that, the plant extract validated its ethnomedicinal reports, enhance required further biological studies for compound isolation and elucidation.
