LIPID PROFILE OF BLOOD DONORS

ABSTRACT

The lipid profile of blood donors is a crucial aspect for guaranteeing the safety and suitability of the donated blood for transfusion purposes. The objective of this investigation was to examine the lipid profiles of blood donors in a tertiary health institution located in Edo State, and to identify potential risk factors. The lipid profile parameters, encompassing total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides (TG), were subjected to analysis in order to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The outcomes of the study displayed that the majority of blood donors exhibited lipid profiles that were within the normal range. Nonetheless, a subgroup of donors presented abnormal lipid levels, indicating a potential risk for cardiovascular ailments. Disparities in lipid profiles were observed among various donor categories and occupational groups, suggesting that lifestyle factors and occupation can exert influence on lipid profiles. However, parameters such as social status, serology screening, genotype, ABO compatibility and body mass index, did not demonstrate significant associations with lipid profiles in the context of this particular study. Further research involving a more extensive and diverse population is required to authenticate and expand upon these findings. The regular assessment of lipid profiles among blood donors offers an opportunity for early detection and intervention. Blood donation centers can contribute to the promotion of cardiovascular health by systematically screening donors for lipid irregularities, thereby identifying individuals who are at risk and encouraging them to pursue appropriate medical attention and adopt healthier lifestyles. This practice guarantees the safety of the donated blood and contributes to the overall well-being of the general public.
