Linguistics Analyses of Names of Urhobo Traditional Delicacies

ABSTRACT

Language is an inevitable phenomenon in human environment. Language is very paramount to human life. It permeates our lives from birth to death. Both language and culture shape a person’s identity. Culture dictates how we interact with other members of a community. And this interaction is possible by the use of language. So the importance of language in relation to culture and human lives cannot be overestimated.

This work focuses on the urhobo people with emphasis on their subculture of food. Food is an important aspect of culture. Every culture or speech community have a local dish which is peculiar and special to them. The urhobo people is not left out. They have a variety of these local traditional delicacies. Through this work I am able to analyse the names of these local delicacies belonging to the urhobo culture using some important linguistic aspect. This research work also focused on the method of preparing these delicacies which will be beneficial to those who do not have a knowledge of how these meal are prepared.
