ABSTRACT
Language is a linguistic tool that aid interpersonal relationship in a society, and every language is built around words which it users employs for communication. This work consequently studies some selected pidgin words that express exclamation. The theoretical framework used for the analysis is the Contextual Theory of Semantics as propounded by the German linguist Ludwig Wittgenstein. However. This research work aim at examining the use of exclamatory pidgin words and how they are used by different Nigerian pidgin speakers. This research work employ two methods of data collection which includes the primary data and the secondary data, the primary involves the the mode of direct conversation with pidgin English speakers which involves a one on one interactions with Uselu market women, and the University of Benin Students, the participant made use of some exclamatory pidgin words like “kai” “na waoh” “ehen” the secondary data were drawn from published and unpublished articles from various prints media chiefly concerned with Nigerian Pidgin, the findings of the study is that a particular pidgin word can be used in different context to arrive at different meaning . In summary this research is concerned with the use of exclamatory words by competent speakers of pidgin, finally the Nigerian pidgin should be seen as near equal to many standard language, because of it lexical items that can be seen in other languages.
