ABSTRACT

This study has examined linguistic reportage on domestic violence in Nigerian newspapers paying attention to the Vanguard, The Guardian, and The Punch. The first chapter introduces the study. It examines the purpose of the study, the scope of the study and the theoretical framework. It uses the theory of critical discourse analysis and the transitivity theory to explore the challenges of domestic violence in the society and how the newspapers report stories of domestic violence. It also reviews related literature in tandem with the topic and ends with a thesis statement. The second chapter presents the data used for analysis. Stories on intimate partner violence and other related stories of violence against the female gender was selected and presented. Chapter three then analyses these data using the tool of Critical Discourse Analysis. It examines the implications of these stories to society in general. It gives room for readers to relate with the different levels of crime in society and the need for solutions that minimizes the prevalent spate of intimate partner violence. Chapter four then does a representational and lexical analysis of the newspapers paying attention to the headings and what they represent. First, it shows how the headings lead the reader’s to the story with suspense filled leads that makes the reader curious and read through the stories. It examines the choice of words and their implication to the story. This chapter the concludes the essay.
