ABSTRACT
This work examines slang used among students of the University of Benin. All other expositions and considerations are ancillary to the above set goals.
The objective of this research is to enlighten and educate the society on the phenomenon of slang. It is intended to correct the misconception abhorred by the society towards slang language and its use by the youths.
The data for this work was collected via oral interview from competent speakers coupled with the researcher’s knowledge of slang and the use of Promise’s (2015) project work obtained from the John Harris Library.
On the basis of the researcher’s findings, it was discovered that the use of slang among students of the University of Benin serves as a suitable means of communication which is highly colloquial and also serves as a medium through which the students can express themselves in different situations such as emotional, social or academic situations.
The frameworks used include the phonological, lexical, morphological, syntactic and semantic analysis of slang.
