ABSTRACT

This study examines life table methods for analyzing mortality patterns and life expectancy in populations. It covers the theory behind constructing different life table types (cohort/period, complete/abridged, single/multiple decrement) using standard and shortcut computational techniques.

An empirical analysis is conducted by constructing an abridged life table for Nigeria in 2019 using World Health Organization data. Key findings reveal high infant mortality, stable adolescent/youth mortality, rising mortality from age 60+, and an overall life expectancy around 63 years.

The mortality insights highlight needs for improved healthcare infrastructure, especially for infants and elderly, as well as supportive policies for the growing youth population.
