LEXICOSTATISTICS ANALYSIS OF STANDARD IGBO, UKWUANI DIALECT AND NWAFIJA DIALECT

                     ABSTRACT

This study is a descriptive analysis of the lexicostatistics analysis of Standard Igbo, Ukwuani dialect and Nwafija dialect. This research examines the similarities and distinction in the lexicons of these three speech forms. It is aimed at determining the levels of mutual intelligibility among Standard Igbo, Ukwuani and Nwafija dialects by using percentage of the cognates derived in them.

The data for this work were gathered from competent native speakers and were analysed accurately. The data for this work were in lexical forms. The frameworks used for this study were lexicostatistics by Morris Swadesh and Comparative method by Karl Verner and Rasmus Rask.

The study found out that there is a higher percentage of cognates between the Standard Igbo and Nwafija dialect with 80% cognate count, while Ukwuani dialect and Nwafija dialect have 14% cognate and Standard Igbo and Ukwuani dialect have 25% cognates.
