ABSTRACT

The general objective of this study is to examine the level of relatedness between Ikale and Ile-oluji dialect of Ondo State, using a lexicostatistic of Morris Swadesh in 1950 as it’s theoretical framework. This work was done with the aim of proving relatedness between both languages as the lexicostatistics of both languages have not been done before. The primary method of data collection is an oral interview of Ile-Oluji dialect and Ikale dialect native speakers within the age range of 25-27 years. A total of 197 words were used, using the Ibadan 400 word list to carry out this work. It was observed that the Ikale dialect and Ile-Oluji dialect are dialects from Yoruba as both the Ikale and Ile-Oluji are mutually intelligible with standard Yoruba.
