ABSTRACT

Lexicalisation is an important aspect in linguistics as it shows that no language is self-sufficient so that at some points languages borrow words from other languages as well as employs other strategies of lexicalisation to expand the lexicon the language and a pidgin originates from borrowing as it involves the speakers of several languages coming together to form a new language. This work seeks to show the various strategies of lexicalisation employed to enrich the lexicon of the Nigerian pidgin. The theoretical frame work adopted for this work is lexical semantics. Data for analysis ware gathered through primary and secondary method. Published materials by the likes of Elugbe and Omamor (1991). Mensah (2011) and others were referred to. After data analysis, eleven strategies of lexicalisation were discovered.
