ABSTRACT

The study examine the lexical shift in Edo personal names; the preference for Òsà. The aim was to account for the historical, cultural, and social factors that have contributed to the rise in popularity of Òsà names in recent years. Data for this study were collected from competent native speakers and books by well known authors were also consulted. Using the sociolinguistic theory; language change and variation the work describes social factors and how the emergence of Òsà names has replaced or supplemented traditional elements promoting an exploration of factors driving this change. The study recognized the cultural and identity, significance that personal and group names hold within the community. The study’s findings revealed the historical origins and development of Òsà personal names are rooted in the Edo culture’s complex evolution, cultural and social factors play a significant role in the preference for Òsà names, Òsà names offer a lens through which to understand the social dynamics and aspirations of the Edo people.
