ABSTRACT
The study examined lexical sense relations in Edo. The data for the study was gotten from competent native speakers of the Edo language and also from published texts and literatures on the Edo language. The instrument used by the researcher to gather consisted of writing notes and pen while the digital instrument was a digital voice recorder. The framework adopted was the Basic Linguistic Theory which focuses on the analysis of language data devoid of theoretical formalisms and notations. The research findings revealed that: there were only six sense relations in Ẹdo namely; synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, homonymy, meronymy and hyponymy, Ẹdo synonyms are of two classes, absolute synonyms and near synonyms. Absolute synonyms are those lexical items that can be used interchangeably in same sentence position while near synonyms cannot be used. Antonyms in Ẹdo are only gradable, reciprocal and bilateral. Non-gradable antonyms do not occur in Ẹdo. Homographic words in Ẹdo are derived by supra-segmental features, i.e., the use of tones.
