ABSTRACT
This project work focuses on the concept of lexical ambiguity in Ika. The aim of the study was to examine and analyse the ambiguity of lexeme in Ika. It also accounted for the contextual meaning of ambiguous lexemes in the language. Data for this study were elucidated from primary and secondary sources. The primary data was collected from two competent native speakers of Ika by personal communication, Secondary data comprises published and unpublished materials on the ambiguity of lexemes in the related languages, etc. In the course of data analysis, the study adopted the contextual theory of meaning developed by “Wittgenstein” as its theoretical model for the description and analysis of the data. The study finds that the inventory of Ika, lexemes display a high level of semantic ambiguity, The study also found out that the Ika ambiguous lexemes are both descriptive and classificatory.
