LEVELS OF SODIUM BENZOATE AND SUGAR IN SELECTED FOOD PRODUCTS IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE -USING UV SPECTROPHOTOMETER

ABSTRACT

The concentrations of Sodium benzoate and sugar in selected drinks and foods sold in Benin City metropolis was investigated. This was done to assess the potential human/health risk front the consumption of these foods and drinks. The samples were purchased from local markets and analyzed for the content of Sodium benzoate and sugar using UV – Vis spectroscopy. These samples were chosen to cover the easily and popular available foods and drinks. The selected samples collected include Peanut butter, Jam, Smoov chapman and Fanta.

 

The sugar content was found to be in the range of 361.7 ± 2.83 to 1591.7 ± 60.10. The highest concentration was obtained in Jam with a value of 1591.7 ± 60.10. While the least concentration was detected in Peanut butter with a value of 361.7 ± 2.83. When the values obtained where compared with World health organization and Standard Organization of Nigeria. Standard Organization of regulatory limits, were found to be within the set values of 7000-14000mg/l and 10000mg/l respectively.

The Sodium benzoate content was found to be in the range of 37.14 ± 7.07 to 162.9 ± 8.13 with   Jam giving the lowest concentration with a value of 37.14 ± 7.07   and Smoov chapman giving the highest concentration with a value of 162.9 ± 8.13. Comparison of the values with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the permitted level in foods in percentage is 0.03-0.2%   But the food samples in percentage is not in accordance with the regulatory standard for the FAO, but it is within the range and can also be regarded as safe to consume. And also comparison of the values with Iranian study, the permitted level in drinks is 102.8-125.0. But the concentration for smoov chapman and Fanta were not in accordance with the Iranian study. These concentration is less than and also higher than the maximum permitted level by the Iranian study, but it can be consider as safe to consume because they are within the maximum permitted level.
