ABSTRACT
Heavy metals are metals with a high specific weight of over 5 g∙cm−3 , and are naturally present in the soil, depending on geological factors. The aim of the study is to determine the levels of some heavy metals in selected vegetables and fruits sell in market places in Benin city. A total of 5 samples consisting of 3 fruits and 2 vegetables were purchased from the local market (New Benin Market). The edible portions were used for the analysis. The fruits include Cucumber, Water melon, Avocados pear, Tomatoes, and Carrot. The samples were stored in polythene bags according to their types. The samples were analyzed for Pb, Cd, Zn, Cr and Fe using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Iron gave the highest concentration of 1.7mg/kg in watermelon. The results show that the heavy metals in the various fruits and vegetables analyzed fell below the maximum permissible limit as prescribed by WHO and FAO, except for Iron (Fe) which was slightly higher. It could be deduced from the analysis that the results obtained show that vegetables and fruits sold in New Benin local market in Benin City are safe for consumption. Further research can still be done on the other fruits and vegetables to ascertain their levels of purity.
