ABSTRACT

The study to investigated the level of hygiene practices among pupils in lower primary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo state. Also of interest in this study were deficiencies in the level of hygiene practices among lower primary pupils based on location, ownership of the schools and sex of the schools. To guide this study four research question were raised, one was answered directly while three were formulated into hypotheses and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population was made up of all the teachers in public primary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size was sixty teachers from 10 schools selected through positive sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a checklist. The data collected were analysed using mean standard deviation, rank order and the independent sample t-test. Based on the data collected the following findings were made. The hygiene practices prevalent in lower primary schools in Oredo L.G.A include Regular washing of hands, sanitation of classrooms and facilities, proper waste disposal, personal hygiene habit and Availability of hand sanitizers and there no significant difference in hygiene practices in lower primary classes based on school location, school ownership and school age. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made among others. That parents and schools owners should encourage good personal hygiene through hygiene facilities.
