ABSTRACT
The advent of information and communications technology has made notable changes to human activities in today’s world. The innovations caused by computer and information technology has resulted in the interaction of people from all parts of the world to software services on the internet by means of computer networks, and technology devices in digital or electronic formats. Thus, the free global access of the internet has made information and communications technology, interconnected computer networks one of the major channels for human communication. The influence of information and communications technology is undoubtedly recognized in Nigeria as the society is in a state of transformation toward a “virtual society,” where people’s daily activities, such as shopping, getting services, and especially sharing information, can be accomplished using smart phones, laptops and other electronic devices without face-to-face contact with others.
Although the use of the internet presents itself with a lot of opportunities and benefits, it has become a safe haven for individuals to indulge in cybercrime and other fraudulent activities that have continuously tarnished the reputation and threatened the economy of the country. This then draws the question of what effective laws have been put in place to curb the negative impacts of cybercrime in Nigeria. Thus, this essay seeks to address the challenges associated with cybercrime and proffer practicable recommendations.
