ABSTRACT

The main purpose of the study is to examine lecturers’ perceptions of the availability and utilization of ICT in teaching in public universities in Edo State, Nigeria. Specifically, it intends to find out the perception of science education lecturers, arts education lecturers, social science education lecturers and their collective perspectives on the availability and utilization of ICT facilities for teaching in public universities. In Edo State. The design of the study is a descriptive survey design. The main purpose of this design is to describe the characteristics, attitudes, opinions, behaviors and experiences of the population, through the administration of a research questionnaire titled Questionnaire on lecturers’ perceptions on the availability and utilization of ICT in teaching in public universities (QLPAUICTTPU). The Grand Mean Ranks and Friedman’s Chi-square test was used for the analysis of data collected from the field. The result obtained showed that the Science lecturers’ perceptions mean ranks of the availability and utilization of information and communication technology in teaching are not significantly different (ᵡ2 = 5.20, p > 0.05). The Arts lecturers’ perceptions mean ranks of the availability and utilization of information and communication technology in teaching are not significantly different (ᵡ2 = 8.00, p > 0.05). The Social Science lecturers’ perceptions mean ranks of the availability and utilization of information and communication technology in teaching are not significantly different (ᵡ2 = 7.20, p > 0.05). The study recommended that State governments in Nigeria should make funds available to public universities to enable them to procure ICT facilities and resources in their universities. In addition, Public universities authorities in Nigeria should allocate at least 20% of their budget for developing ICT facilities, resources and services in their Universities. Public Universities should collaborate with other agencies in ensuring the provision of ICT facilities in their Universities.
