ABSTRACT
The study investigated lecturers' perception of undergraduate B.A.(Ed) English and Literature students' academic writing ability. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and two hypothesis were tested.
The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study is 35 lecturers made up of all the English Language Education lecturers in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education (10) and in the Department of English and Literature, Faculty of Arts (25), in the University of Benin, Edo state. Total population sampling was done as the population for the study was small. A questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. Research questions 1-4 were analyzed using Mean and SD, while hypothesis 1 was tested using T-test and hypothesis 2 was tested using ANOVA.
The findings from the study showed that the perceptions of lecturers on the academic writing ability of B.A.(Ed.) English and Literature students is below average and that B.A.(Ed.) English and Literature students have more strengths than weaknesses in their academic writing skills. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that students should take advantage of the access provided by modern digital technology to improve knowledge in their course areas and that lecturers must ensure that students' responses to assignments are properly vetted.
