ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to examine the link that exists between leadership style (autocratic, democratic and laissez faire) and employee performance in Nigeria tertiary institution. In a bid to achieve this, a questionnaire was distributed to various respondents of which data were collected based on their responses. The study employed the use of OLS regression technique to examine the impact of the various leadership styles on employee performance as well as T test to examine the difference in the various leadership styles in the various institutions.
From the analysis carried out it was observed that amongst the leadership styles autocratic and democratic leadership style differed in Novena and Delta State University. Leadership style has an impact on employee performance in both Universities and management style in relation to employee performance did not differ in both Universities amongst the leadership styles autocratic leadership style was found to have a negative impact on employee performance in both institutions.
It was therefore recommended that democratic leadership style should be imbibed by most institutions due to the fact that this style of leadership encourages employer to give employees free access to know the problems the university is facing, targets and encourages them to suggest and proffer solutions. In this respect, employer becomes a consulting leader and not an authoritarian. It is also recommended that the use of autocratic leadership style should be limited so as to bring out the best in employees.
