ABSTRACT

Lead is the second most toxic heavy metals that can have a devastating impact on the environment and human health. Bus parks are a potential source of lead pollution due to their proximity to busy roads and the use of lead-containing gasoline. This sort of lead exposure risks deterioration of soil quality, reduction of soil fertility and crop production, and also threatens human and animal health. The aim of this study was to assess the concentration levels of lead in some selected bus parks in Benin City as well as the ecological risks using soil samples that were collected from twelve (12) bus parks based on their proximity to major roads and their traffic volume. The mean of lead concentrations in the soils of the study stations ranged from 0.02mg/kg to 0.51mg/kg. The range for pollution lead Index (PLI) was from 0.00 to 0.006. Contamination factor (CF) and degree of contamination (DC) were between 0.001 and 0.007. Potential ecological risk index ranged between 0.02 to 0.51. The results obtained therein can thus be used as data for further studies and aid monitoring of ecological risk to the environment.
